MINDING THE GAP

  All of which may be good news for Tesla and its peers sitting at the other end of the supply chain but it would seem to bode ill for the countless junior miners aiming for a piece of the lithium action.
  The big three, or big four if Ganfeng is included, are understandably keen not to loosen their historic grip on the market even as it enters a period of potentially explosive growth. But those hoping to form part of a third, future supply wave shouldn’t lose hope. Because while supply appears to be firming up, demand remains a fast-moving, elusive part of the price equation.As recently as March this year SQM said it believed lithium demand “could grow over 10 percent per year in the near term”. Fast forward four months and it has lifted that estimate by four percentage points.

Miliardy pod Cínovcem

Lithium
Ústecký kraj má pověst jednoho z nejzanedbanějších regionů České republiky. Může za to především těžba hnědého uhlí, která za sebou nechává zdevastovanou krajinu. Rekultivace sice mnoho jizev minulosti zahladila, ale riziko, že se do tamních kopců zakousne nenasytné rypadlo těžařů, opět enormně roste. Může za to lithium, které leží pod povrchem v katastru obce Cínovec na Teplicku.
   Nejnovější zpráva z geologického průzkumu hovoří o 6,5 milionu tun vytěžitelného lithia. To je asi o třicet procent více, než se odhadovalo původně. Průzkumné vrty provedla společnost Geomet, kterou má v rukou australská firma European Metals Holdings. Její akcie kótované na australské burze v Sydney na dobré zprávy náležitě zareagovaly. Jen od začátku letošního února jejich cena vyletěla na dvojnásobek. Za poslední rok se tržní hodnota firmy zvýšila dokonce desetkrát.
   Lithium je cennou surovinou pro výrobu elektrických baterií. Vzhledem k tomu, že se v nejbližší době  předpokládá rozmach elektromobilů, představuje cennější surovinu než ropa, zemní plyn či zlato. Proto se o naleziště v Cínovci živě zajímá americký miliardář Elon Musk. Podle technologického webu The Space Invader dokonce zvažuje, že přímo v Česku postaví továrnu na svá elektroauta Tesla.

Experience with Dry Engineered Sand

More than twenty years ago Luck Stone Corporation, one of the largest family-owned and operated aggregates companies in the USA, embarked on a sequenced investigation to satisfy demand for a dry asphalt sand product that would avoid the environmental concerns inherent in wet systems. The solution also led them to applications for the production of their own design for dry engineered concrete sand.
 
 Some time ago,Luck Stone’s Northern Virginia sales staff requested a manufactured sand product to provide to their asphalt customers. Engineered sand specifications for concrete in the USA are controlled by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) through C33 and are significantly different to most other countries in the world. Manufactured sand for use in asphalt in Virginia, Luck Stone’s primary market, is generally considered to be a material passing 6.3 mm (1/4 inch) screen. However the real asphalt issue was, and is, the excess minus 75 μm (200 mesh) which was desired to be less than 7 % passing 75 μm (200 mesh).
  Because most “screenings” have significantly more material passing 75 μm (200 mesh), a process to remove this excess material was undertaken. Luck Stone had routinely employed a wet process to remove this excess 75 μm (200 mesh) material, but concerns with space and the environmental aspects of this process pointed to the desirability of a dry processing system.
   Although consideration was given to the wet process, Luck Stone did not believe it would be the best solution. As a result, in 1990 they began an investigation into dry alternatives to de-watering with a classifying screw.

Raw materials for the ceramic industry 2017 (part I)

ABRASIVES
Apparent consumption of fused aluminum oxide (alumina) dropped by 20.3% in 2015 to 141,000 t, while silicon carbide increased by 6.3% to 151,000 t. Abrasives consumption in the U.S. is strongly influenced by activity in manufacturing sectors such as aerospace, automotive, furniture, housing and steel, which all experienced increased production last year.
Fused alumina was produced by two companies at three U.S. plants in the U.S. and Canada in 2015; production had an estimated value of $1.65 million. Two companies at two U.S. plants produced silicon carbide, with an estimated value of $25.9 million.

Honba po lithiu v Cínovci nabírá na síle

   Česká geologická  společnost Geomet,která provádí v severočeském Cínovci  geologický průzkum výskytu karbonátu lithia, je vlastněna společností  EMH (European Metals Holdings) kotovanou na australské burze.Od začátku letošního února se hodnota  jejích akcií více než dvojnásobně zvýšila; oproti loňsku vzrostla na desetinásobek. Nedávný vzestup ceny akcií reagoval mimo jiné na dva dokumenty zveřejňující závěry z posledních průzkumných vrtů v oblasti. „Výsledky potvrdily nebopřekonaly předešlé předpoklady obsahu lithia,“ uvádí zpráva pro investory.

Cínovec: v odkališti je lithium za dvě miliardy

Společnost Cínovecká deponie, kterou ovládá investiční skupina RSJ miliardáře Karla Janečka, dostala od báňského úřadu poslední povolení k těžbě lithia z odkaliště v krušnohorském Cínovci. Separace lithných slíd by mohla začít za dva až tři roky.
V minulosti se lithná ruda získávala jen jako druhotná surovina například při těžbě cínu. V poslední době ale díky použití v bateriích mobilních telefonů nebo elektromobilů poptávka po tomto alkalickém kovu roste. Právě na to vsadila před třemi lety investiční společnost RSJ, když koupila většinové podíly v Cínovecké deponii a společnosti Sanaka, které se snažily získat potřebná povolení k těžbě ze starých odkališť v Cínovci a v Horním Slavkově.

Ethiopia develops major potash reserves for Asia

   Ethiopia's potential as a source of industrial minerals is beginning to be realised, with a growing number of exploration and mining projects underway amid rapidly increasing foreign investment.
   The Ministry of Mines has granted 72 industrial minerals exploration licences, with 61 going to foreign companies, eight to Ethiopian/foreign joint ventures and three to local  companies. Some 52 mining licences have also been approved, with 28 to foreign companies, 17 to Ethiopian/foreign joint ventures and seven to local companies.  The licences are for minerals including potash, limestone, marble, pumice, clay, gypsum, basalt, silica sand and gemstone, salt and soda ash.

New method for large-scale silica production

Silica is a hot commodity—hundreds of thousands of tons of silica are produced every year, and it’s used in everything from paint to electronics to toothpaste to tires.But how silica is produced isn’t the most energy efficient or cost effective. 
 Earlier this year, ACerS member Richard Laine, a professor of materials science and engineering at the University of Michigan, published research hat pioneers a new approach to silica mass production—one that uses much less energy and can be generated from otherwise wasted agricultural materials.  „The answer’s been staring us in the face for 15 years and we missed it. I’m really excited that it finally occurred to us and not somebody else,” Laine says in a recent video produced by University of Michigan’s engineering department.

Cement Manufacturer Solves Conveyor Carryback

  A world leader in conveyor bulk handling solutions has used its innovative belt cleaning technology to help a cement manufacturer resolve fugitive material buildup caused by a variety of alternative fuel resources (AFRs).
   Mexico’s second largest cement producer, Holcim Mexico increased the use of solid and liquid AFRs at one of its facilities, but the change resulted in spillage and carryback that caused equipment failures, cleanup and maintenance costs estimated at $ 67,000 per month. The solution from Martin Engineering Mexico has significantly decreased the amount of spillage, increased workplace safety and lowered the cost of operation.
   Located in southeastern Mexico, the Planta Macuspana facility produces 1 million metric tons (1,102,311 tons) of cement annually. Out of Holcim’s total annual output of 12.6 million metric tons (13,889,123 tons) from seven operating plants, nearly 14 percent of the total thermal energy demand was fulfilled by the use of AFRs in 2013.

V Česku se rozjíždí lithiová horečka

Zájem o lithium, využívané k ukládání energie v bateriích, i jeho cena v poslední době prudce rostou. Zatímco v roce 2011 se celosvětově spotřebovalo 130 tisíc tun uhličitanu lithného, současný objem globální produkce okolo 35 tisíc tun za rok přestává odběratelům stačit v roce 2025 by celosvětová spotřeba měla činit půl milionu tun. Uhličitan lithný je klíčový pro používání v bateriích, přičemž v přepočtu lze z jedné tuny vytěžit zhruba pětinu čistého lithia. Do poloviny loňského roku se cena základní suroviny, uhličitanu lithného, držela mezi čtyřmi a šesti tisíci dolary za tunu. Během podzimu však začala prudce růst, nyní se hovoří o ceně 10 tisíc dolarů za tunu. A podle portálu Asia Metal nelze tuto surovinu v Číně sehnat za cenu nižší než 16 800 dolarů za tunu.
   Pokud jde o jeho náleziště v České republice, dosud hovořilo hlavně o cínovecké lokalitě v Krušných horách. Jen v malé oblasti označované jako Cínovec – jih se má podle starších geologických studií nacházet 113 tisíc tun lehkého kovu s atomovým číslem tři. Další zásoby v severočeském okolí zůstávají dodnes nezmapované.

Appalachian coal richest in rare elements

  A study of the content of rare earth elements in U.S. coal ashes shows that coal mined from the Appalachian Mountains could be the proverbial golden goose for hard-to-find materials critical to clean energy and other emerging technologies.
  In the wake of a 2014 coal ash spill into North Carolina's Dan River from a ruptured Duke Energy drainage pipe, the question of what to do with the nation's aging retention ponds and future coal ash waste has been a highly contested topic.
   One particularly entrepreneurial idea is to extract so-called "critical" rare earth elements such as neodymium, europium, terbium, dysprosium, yttrium and erbium from the burned coal. The Department of Energy has identified these globally scarce metals as a priority for their uses in clean energy and other emerging technologies. But exactly how much of these elements are contained in different sources of coal ash in the U.S. had never been explored.
Researchers from Duke University measured the content of rare earth elements in samples of coal ash representing every major coal source in the United States. They also looked at how much of these elements could be extracted from ash using a common industrial technique.

When measuring the flow rate and totalization of a bulk solid materials with a flow meter, there are a lot of options. However, when the particles of the bulk solid are large, irregular shaped, and vary greatly in bulk density, the options quickly dwindle down to a few.
Large Bulk Materials like tobacco, recycled plastic bottles, recycled carpet pieces, trash, construction debris, biomass feed stocks (like wood products, hay, straw, and leaves) and the like are not only difficult to move through a process, but their product characteristics make it almost impossible to accurately measure the flow.
