The global glass community received news of a €25 million investment in glass research to establish the new Centre for Functional and Surface-Functionalized Glasses (FunGLASS) in Trenčín, Slovakia. The Centre includes partner institutions in Germany, Spain, and Italy.
This project is the second large-scale glass research project underway. In Brazil in 2013, the São Paulo State Research Foundation funded $22M for 11 years to establish the Center for Research Technology and Education in Vitreous Materials (CeRTEV). Edgar Zanotto at the Federal University of São Carlos leads the Brazilian effort. With CeRTEV only approaching its midpoint, the establishment of this European center boosts the momentum and importance of glass research on a global scale.
